Getting familiar with GLOWNZ

Last year Te Mirianga Parkers started up her company GLOWNZ. When GLOWNZ first started up we were lucky enough to be one of the first companies that had the opportunity to work with with them.

When working with GLOWNZ they provided us with their high quality ring light and in return we got some great content for GLOWNZ and ourselves to use across our social medias and websites.

Since working with GLOWNZ we have seen this business flourish, working with influencers such as Sophie Burnside (@iamsoph), and working at events such as the Otaki Christmas Day Races. GLOWNZ has also expanded their business from just a ring light hire company, to an event styling company that provides an array of items needed to create a beautiful event, these include balloon garlands and prop hire.

Due to COVID-19 we have seen the events industry be hit hard by the decrease in social events. We thought GLOWNZ was a very interesting business to write a blog about as we have been involved with this business right from the beginning. We have seen this business grow, and now we are seeing the result COVID-19 has had on businesses within the events industry.

Here's what we asked GLOWNZ so you can get to know this company better:

Where is your business based?

Auckland.

How many years have you been in operation?

1 year.

What's one unique thing about your business?

I think I am what is ‘unique’ to my business. I am in the event styling hire industry which requires originality, creativity, and style. So I would say myself :) I’m interested in simplistic and sleek styles compared to others.

What does you company do?

We used to be a full event styling hire business however am now only an Event Prop Hire business and will do the occasional balloon garland

Did COVID-19 affect your business? If so, how was your business affected and how can we help as a community?

YES! Due to COVID-19 the entire events industry collapsed which meant we had all our events lined up cancelled and have zero business for the past 2 months. And the events industry has not picked up yet either and I'm not too sure when it will so I haven’t had much interest now either. And due to COVID-19 I have not been able to finance the business which has led me to change my direction and instead of being a full on event styling hire business I'm going to be selling most of our stock and only hiring out giant numbers and becoming a Events prop hire business! Maybe doing the occasional balloon garland haha it is easier and more doable for me at this time.

What's one unique thing about your business?

I think I am what is ‘unique’ to my business. I am in the event styling hire industry which requires originality, creativity, and style. So I would say myself :) I’m interested in simplistic and sleek styles compared to others.

What was your most favourite event that you styled?

My definite favourite would have had to be for my client Jenny’s 21st at the Whiteroom!! We did a massive 8m jumbo balloon garland, our gold circle round with florals, and our photo booth.

What has been your most rewarding part of your business?

The most rewarding part has to be making many connections throughout the Auckland region whether that is clients, businesses, and people in general because I’m not from Auckland so it has been a great way to meet people!

What has been the most challenging part of your business?

The most challenging part I would say was pushing through every challenge that came my way. I had soooo many muck ups, mistakes, problems, obstacles I had to and still do need to overcome to be able to push through that has definitely been the hardest part!

Do you find inspiration in other people and companies? If so, Who are they and why do they inspire you?

100%!! Other events companies are what inspired me to give it a go and where I get most of my ideas and inspiration from!! Selfie Station was the first business that made me want to start a photo booth business because they were charging insanely high prices for their photo booths and I thought it was just ridiculous so decided to offer the same service at a much much cheaper rate. Then I realised it wasn’t working and people were more interested in packages and OMGNESS styling was a big inspiration to start doing balloon garlands. I taught myself everything and found out about all the equipment needed, how to do it, and practice makes perfect hehe. I then realised i may as well do it all and go full event styling hire so then decided to purchase backdrops, doughnut walls and do signage as well!

What's one piece of business advice someone has given you that has always stuck with you?

The only way to grow is through learning... The only way to learn is if you get things wrong. It is okay to get it wrong.

What's one piece of business advice you would like to share with our community?

At the core and at the end of the day, if you are passionate about what you do in business, you’ll succeed no matter what. And make sure that ‘success’ is your view of success, not someone’s view of success.
